1. What a Sauna Is
A sauna is an enclosed space designed for controlled heat exposure. The evidence has important limits. Much of the long-term cardiovascular evidence is observational, so it cannot prove that sauna caused the lower risk. A systematic review found that many clinical studies were small and heterogeneous. A more recent meta-analysis of randomized passive-heating trials found no significant pooled improvement for most cardiometabolic outcomes.

Sweat primarily helps regulate body temperature. It is not a meaningful general detoxification system; the liver, kidneys, lungs, and digestive system handle most chemical processing and elimination.
